The Middle-Brook Regional Health Commission is pleased to be able to offer free radon test kits, while supplies last, in recognition of Radon Action Month.

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when uranium and radium break down in the soil and in rock formations.  Radon gas moves up through the soil and finds its way into homes through cracks in the foundation and openings around pumps, pipes, and drains.  Radon is a serious health risk.  According to the EPA, Radon is the number one cause of cancer among non-smokers and contributes to about 21,000 deaths per year.

Free test kits are available at the Green Brook Municipal Building in the office of the Health Department on a first come-first served basis.

If the test indicates a radon problem, radon mitigation systems can be installed at a cost similar to that of other home repairs.
For more information on radon or a list of certified mitigation companies contact the health department or the DEP Radon Program at (800) 648-0394 or visit www.njradon.org.
